What is the Plot of Queen’s Gambit?

The storyline begins in Lexington, Kentucky. Where a nine-year-old girl named Beth after losing her mother in a tragic car crash, she is being taken into an orphanage where she learned chess from the building’s custodian Mr. Shaibel. The orphanage used to give daily tranquilizer pills to the girls and Beth gets addicted to it. Soon Beth becomes a strong chess player due to her visualization skills that were being amplified due to the tranquilizers.

After few years Beth was being adopted by Alma Wheatley and her husband from Lexington. As Beth settles down into her new home later Beth enters into a chess tournament and wins without having any experience in competitive chess. She develops friendships with few people including former Kentucky state champion none other than Harry Beltik. Benny Walts gifted but arrogant chess player also later becomes her friend and mentor. As Beth continues to win more games and get financial benefits in her way of success, she becomes more and more dependent on drugs and alcohol.
